This very old variety, adapted to cold climates, produces thick, broadly blistered green leaves with red and brown shading, forming a dense, crunchy apple.
Originally from Austria, it dates from the 1700s.

Sow in pots or slabs at a temperature of 10-18°C, one month before planting. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, press lightly and water. Once the plants have 4 leaves, prick out. You can also sow lightly, directly in the field, every 15 days for better staggered harvests, then thin out. This type of sowing produces hardier plants, less susceptible to bolting.
Not very sensitive to cold, it is one of the first lettuces to be sown at the end of winter.

This very old variety dates back to the 1700s and originated in Austria. It was introduced to the United States by the Southern Exposure Seed Exchange in 1986. This variety was brought from Austria to the United States in the 1900s and has been maintained by the Schweitzer family ever since.
