in bucket, in the ground

Sow in pots at a temperature of between 18 and 20°C, 6 weeks before planting. Transplant with the root ball, after the last frosts, in planting holes enriched with compost, spaced 1 m apart in all directions. Sowing in the open ground is possible under the same conditions when the soil is well warmed and outside temperatures no longer fall below 15°C.

Cucumbers like warm, rich soil. Mulching after planting retains water and protects from the cold. In dry regions, let the stems run along the ground; in wetter regions, trellis them. Regular watering will avoid accentuating the bitterness of the fruit.

This variety was bred by Henri Munger of Cornell University in 1976. During his 55-year career, he was the breeder of some fifty cucumber varieties. It was he who discovered a wild carrot flower with pink petals in 1953, while picking blueberries. This wild carrot was characterized by male sterility, and helped launch the commercial creation of hybrid carrot varieties. He died recently at the age of 94.
