Lettuces

Lettuces

Cultivated lettuce - Lactuca sativa - is a member of the Asteraceae family and the Lactuceae tribe. The genus Lactuca comprises some 100 known species. Lactuca sativa is highly variable. Easy to grow, lettuces come in a wide variety of shapes, colors and textures. Spring, summer, autumn and winter lettuces can be harvested all year round! All our bagged lettuce seeds are organic, royalty-free and reproducible.

Sowing advice: from February to October, depending on the variety, sow lettuce seeds indoors, under a light shelter, at a temperature of between 15 and 21°C. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and keep the substrate moist until emergence. Seeds generally germinate in 2 to 8 days. Once the plants have 4 leaves, transplant the seedlings into the vegetable garden at 30 cm intervals in all directions. To sow directly in the garden, sow lightly every 15 days to spread out the harvest. Some lettuces, such as Moroccan Cressonnette, can also be grown in pots.

The nutritional value of different types of lettuce varies considerably: "Batavia", "Pommée", "À Couper"... Although lettuces are generally an excellent source of vitamin A, K, B9 and fiber, an American study compared the nutritional values of different types of lettuce, per 100 grams of leaves. The results show that romaine and leaf lettuces offer higher levels of vitamin A, C and calcium than head and batavia lettuces. On the other hand, head lettuces contain more iron than all other types.
