This "genetic reservoir", created by Frank Morton, was obtained by crossing his highly resistant varieties with some of his tastiest lettuces. The result combines the best characteristics of these different varieties.
Frank Morton specifically requests that any breeding work based on his "Merlox genepool" remains in the public domain.

in bucket, in the ground
Sow in pots or slabs at a temperature of 10-18°C, one month before planting. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil, press lightly and water. Once the plants have 4 leaves, prick out. Alternatively, sow in rows 30 cm apart, every 15 days, to stagger harvesting. Thin to 10 cm, then 30 cm. This type of sowing produces hardier plants, less susceptible to bolting.

It's a "genetic reservoir" selected from lettuces identified for their resistance during a three-year project called "Hell's Half-Acre lettuce trial". Some forty lettuce varieties were tested. Frank Morton crossed some of these highly resistant varieties (e.g. "Merlot" and "Reine des Glaces") with some of his tastiest and created what he called his "Merlox genepool" to select and recombine the most excellent characteristics of these diverse varieties. Frank Morton specifically requested that any breeding work based on his "Merlox genepool" remain in the public domain.
