Ref : F1717 - Scutellaria barbata
Bag of 100 seeds

Bearded skullcap, or ban zhi lian, is a bushy herbaceous perennial that can grow to almost 1.60 m in height. Its hairless, serrated leaves set off pretty little blue or violet flowers, visible in summer.

This medicinal plant originates from Asia, particularly southern China and the whole of Korea. It is simply harvested in summer or autumn, cleaned and dried.

Ban zhi lian or bearded skullcap is a medicinal plant with promising cancer-fighting properties. This herbaceous plant is anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. Ban zhi lian (bearded skullcap) is used as a therapeutic treatment for liver diseases such as hepatitis and hepatocellular carcinoma. Ban zhi lian or bearded skullcap treats and relieves migraines, depression and neurological trauma. Ban zhi lian contains numerous active compounds with flavonoids including scutellarein, scutellarin, carthamidin and isocarthamidin, as well as sterols with b-sitosterol, benzoic acid and alkaloids. For centuries, ban zhi lian (bearded skullcap) has been recognized and prescribed by traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) for its anti-inflammatory, diuretic, astringent and anti-tumor properties. It is cold in nature, bitter and pungent in taste, and channels itself through the liver and lungs, stomach and kidneys. At the time, it was known for its ability to clear heat and flush toxins from the body, eliminate stagnation and stop bleeding, soothe pain and reduce swelling. It was therefore prescribed for boils and sores, abscesses and furunculosis, traumatic wounds and oedemas, liver diseases including hepatitis, jaundice and liver cancer, and still seems to be relevant today in this pharmacopoeia. Numerous studies have been carried out in Asia and elsewhere on the medicinal properties of this plant, focusing on its direct action on cancer cells, and Western countries are now taking up the challenge of determining its active principles in this field (source: https://www.complements-alimentaires.co/scutellaire-barbue/).

in the ground, in nurseries

Sow in a nursery 3 weeks before planting in the garden. Cover the seeds very lightly, plumb gently, and keep the soil moist, ideally at a temperature of around 18°, until germination. Depending on the season, transplant seedlings into pots or directly into the garden.

Scuttelarias like cool, well-drained, slightly moist soil. A semi-shaded position is ideal, even if they can tolerate full sun. A spacing of 60 cm will provide the space needed for harmonious plant growth.
