Malva verticillata - Mallow
This East Asian species has large, dark-green, tender, wavy leaves with a lamb's lettuce taste. Shoots and young leaves can be eaten fresh, in salads, or cooked, like spinach.

Sow in pots under light cover. Keep moist until emergence. Transplant with the rootball into warmed soil when plants have 4 to 5 leaves. You can also sow directly in the ground.
Mauves are very cold-hardy, withstanding temperatures as low as -25°C. As perennials, we recommend pruning Mauves back fairly severely in the spring of the second year, so that they can flower even more fully in summer.
