This ancient variety originates from Maine in the United States. It is said to have been brought by a whaler from Ile Saint-Georges in the Azores to Nantucket in Maine in 1832. It became known as the "Nantucket Pumpkin". It is also known as "Indian" or "Oblong". The Burpee seed company offered it in 1888 under the name "Sr Georges". It seems very close to the "Golden Oblong" variety introduced by Burpee in 1889. In the late 1980s, LeRoy Souther, who had grown it for 30 years in Maine, entrusted seeds to John Navazio, who reintroduced it with Montana seeds company Garden City Seeds.
