This is a perennial species with a rhizome about 50 cm high. It has a hairy purple stem, a few broad leaves with 5 or 7 toothed lobes, and a single white terminal flower with prominent stamens.
It is well known on the North American continent for its many medicinal properties. It is sometimes used as a dye.
