This species, known as Djuli in Taiwan, can grow up to 2 m tall and boasts magnificent, highly decorative dark-red flower stalks. Its young leaves are eaten cooked, and its seeds are used in cereals.

 

It has many medicinal qualities, including anti-oxidant properties, and is used in fermented beverages by the Indigenous Peoples of Taiwan.

Sow in trays or pots, under cover. Transplant at 50 cm in all directions, when plants are 10 to 15 cm tall, after the last frosts. Sow light-colored directly in place, in well-warmed soil, in rows 50 cm apart. Thin to 20 or 50 cm when plants have 5 to 6 leaves.
