This vigorous variety, earlier than the "Waltham", produces 4 to 8 bottle-shaped fruits, up to 40 cm long and 1.5 kg. The flesh is very fine, with an exquisite hazelnut flavor. The fruit keeps for over a year.

Sow in pots at a temperature of between 18 and 20°C, 2 to 3 weeks before planting. Transplant, with the root ball, into the ground, after the last frosts, at a distance of at least 2 m in all directions. Named in honor of the Ponca Native American people, this variety was developed by Dermot P. Coyne of the University of Nebraska at Lincoln. It is the result of a cross between "New Hamsphire Butternut" and "Butternut 23".
