Place seeds in the refrigerator for 60 days before sowing in spring. Sow in trays, making sure seeds are lightly covered. When the plants have 5 to 6 leaves, transplant into individual cups or directly into warmed soil. Autumn sowing is done in the same way and left outdoors until spring.

This medicinal plant contains an alkaloid, "http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/acschemneuro.5b00015" Tabersonine, which is currently being studied as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease. Tabersonine is a precursor of vincamine, another terpene known for its ability to improve cerebral blood flow and cellular respiration. "https://hungary.pure.elsevier.com/en/publications/analysis-of-the-essential-oil-of-amsonia-illustris" Laboratory analysis in Hungary highlighted the presence of some thirty volatile compounds in the essential oil of its leaves, including the sesquiterpenes á-humulene (14.5%), β-caryophyllene (12.4%) and guaiol (11.6%). The essential oil of its roots contains pinocampheol, methyl salicylate, (2E,4E)-decadienal, eugenol and trans-isoeugenol.
