Silphium

Silphium

Silphium are plants in the Asteracea family and Heliantheae tribe. The Silphium genus comprises 23 known species. Plants in the Silphium genus were generally used as tonics and diaphoretics. Silphium laciniatum was used to treat chronic rheumatism, dry coughs and fevers. Children used to chew the resinous juice of the plant's stems on their way to school. The name Silphium is derived from a Greek term referring to a resinous juice. Research was carried out in the Soviet Union into the possible fodder uses of Silphium perfoliatum. Unlike flowers of the Helianthus genus, such as sunflowers, the florets in the heart of the flower are sterile. In fact, it's the crown of petals that is fertile.
